ABOUT THIS BOOK:
Nigerian secondary school students undertake chemistry examinations in WASSCE (West
African Senior School Certificate Examination), SSCE (Senior School Certificate Examination),
GCE (General Certificate Examination) and IGCSE (International General Certificate
of Secondary Education). A part of the chemistry examination is practical which can either
be real practical in the laboratory or alternative to practical. There is no gainsaying that
many students are having challenges in understanding the principles behind excellent
performance in this subject. My experience, as a classroom chemistry teacher for about
three decades, has revealed that many chemistry teachers are not adequately equipped to
handle practical chemistry effectively and by implication, they are unable to help the students
overcome some of the challenges or difficulties they encounter. Also, many schools
are not well equipped with apparatus for students to sight and use. This affects the ability
of the students to visualise the concept their teachers teach.
This book, which is a revised edition, comprehensively covers the basic concepts of chemistry
practical for the purpose of examinations organised by the examination bodies such as
West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). It also provides solutions to those challenges
encountered by the students and teachers. In conformity with the secondary school curriculum,
the book takes care of key topics such as laboratory apparatus, the mole concept,
volumetric analysis, separation techniques, preparation of standard solutions, identification
of cations, anions and gases, heat of reactions and rates of chemical reactions.
Each chapter of this book ends with practical examples, summary and relevant practice
questions, which are designed to evaluate the students on the subject matter. The last chapter
of this book focuses on model questions and answers for students to be acquainted with
the expectations of different examination bodies.
