ABOUT THIS BOOK:
Phonics is a method of teaching pupils to read wherein they are taught to recognise the sounds that letters of the alphabet represent. They are made to understand that words are composed of letters that represent sounds. At a tender age, a young child is eager to learn and can absorb information at a fast rate. Phonics is the best approach to teach young children to decode unfamiliar words. The first book in this series introduces the child to the forty-two (42) letter sounds. Familiar pictures and words are used to give the children a firm grasp of the letter sounds. With a knowledge of the letter sounds, reading becomes an easy task for children. Procedure for teaching The teacher introduces the lesson with a short story that will emphasise the letter sound he/she wants to teach. The teacher should vary the tone and pitch of his/her voice while telling the story to make it more interesting to the children. It is always advisable to prepare your story before the lesson. As the teacher tells the story, when he/she gets to the point where she mentions the letter sound, she raises a letter card that has the letter sound on it. Let the pupils look at the letter sound and let reinforcement be encouraged for better recognition of the sound. Have the children trace the letter sound in the air with a finger. Then, encourage them to write the letter sound by following the direction in the book. Let them say the letter sound as they trace it. In addition, the book provides ample phonic activities/games that will help children recognise each letter and its name.
