ABOUT THIS BOOK:
New Edition of the hugely popular New Method Mathematics is structured to adequately meet the requirements of the Primary Mathematics curriculum recently revised by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) Curriculum for the Basic Education programme in Nigeria, which places much emphasis on the affective, cognitive and psychomotor domains of learning. The series now, more than ever before, satisfies the demands of the curriculum, which stresses the need to give pupils the opportunity to: 1 acquire mathematical literacy necessary to function in an information age; 2 cultivate the understanding and application of mathematical skills and concepts necessary to thrive in the ever-changing technological world; 3 develop the essential elements of problem-solving, communication, reasoning and connection within their study of mathematics; and 4 understand the major ideas of mathematics, bearing in mind the ever-changing nature of the world in which they live. After a careful use of the books in the series, therefore, even an average pupil will: 1 be permanently numerate by the end of the six-year course; 2 be able to utilise the acquired knowledge and skills in everyday life and in the learning of primary science; 3 be able to use the acquired knowledge and skills as background knowledge and foundation for the junior secondary mathematics and science curricula; and 4 have a solid foundation in the basic concepts in mathematics. In this new edition, a curriculum matching chart showing the location of topics is provided to facilitate the learning and teaching of Primary Mathematics. As in the previous edition, the thematic approach has been adopted in the selection and presentation of topics and concepts. The major topics under each theme constitute the chapters while the different concepts are treated as units. Concepts under each of the chapters are presented in a number of units needed to ensure that the concepts are well understood by the pupils. Adequate instructions, guidelines, exercises, as well as teaching tips are also provided to enable the teacher or the parent to guide the pupils appropriately.
