ABOUT THIS BOOK:
The New Concept English for Senior Secondary Schools series has been designed for teaching and learning English language at the Senior 􀀶econdary 􀀶chools level􀀏 and offers an impeccable platform for preparing students for the 􀀶enior 􀀶econdary 􀀶chools 􀀦erti􀃀cate E􀁛amination (WAEC and NECO) in English language. Based on the contents and requirements of the NERDC Curriculum for English language learning at the Senior Secondary level, the wellstr 􀁘ct􀁘red lessons in the series are 􀃀lled 􀁚ith a wide variety of fun and learning activities to build and challenge the competence of learners in the use of English language, and to make serious learning truly exciting. 􀀤 care􀁉􀁘l and deliberate effort has been made to teach the four basic language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing, in each of the books. This explains the reason for the adequate reading content and language exercises in the entire course. The activities in the text are diverse, but with greater emphasis on speaking, listening, and problem-solving – all designed to jump-start discussion and fuel English language conversations, with the aim of helping students solve problems through collaborative strategy- sharing. The level of challenge and di􀎀c􀁘lty in the content􀀐rich activities in the series is appropriate for each class, with clear and 􀁚ell􀀐tho􀁘ght o􀁘t differentiation 􀁚ithin levels􀀑 This book has 19 units and appendices highlighting holiday assignments, words often mispronounced, phonetic symbols, words often misspelt, irregular verbs and listening texts. The Oral English component describes the sounds being taught. Students are given the opportunity to master the pronunciation of the sounds through dialogue practice and writing practice. Reminders and Tips included in the various sections of the book help students to remember what they have learned in all the four basic language skills, and also to equip them with consummate skills to learn and discover new things. The grammar component teaches a particular topic, often reinforced through exercises and pair work. The reading component helps st􀁘dents to re􀃁ect and discuss, summarise and draw conclusions. The writing component is taught through guided composition, where students are engaged in re􀃁ective thin􀁎ing􀀑 􀀬t is important to state that the listening texts have been included as an appendix to the book. This is done to discourage students from reading the texts in advance. There is no gainsaying the fact that the eclectic approach to teaching and learning English language adopted in the series is perhaps the best on offer to meet the evolving needs of English language teachers and students in Nigeria.
