ABOUT THIS BOOK:
Exploring Science adopts the thematic approach required by the new NERDC curriculum. In this approach, four themes are considered. The themes are Learning about our environment, Living and non-living things, Understanding technology and You and energy. They are all well treated. In this fourth book of the series, each theme is divided into chapters and units. Theme 1 has four chapters: Changes in nature 1, Changes in nature 2, Our weather, and Safety in our environment, with sixteen units. Theme 2 has twelve chapters: Changes in plants and animals, Disease, Pests and diseases of crop plants, Food types and uses, Adequate/balanced diet, Harmful foods and bad feeding habits, Constituents of the soil, Human body: Mouth and the feeding system, Water, The water cycle, Measuring liquids, and Measuring the length, breadth and area of objects, with thirty-seven units. Theme 3 has seven chapters: Technology and you, Gardening tools and growing of crops, Weeds, Shape construction with paper, wood and metal, Identification of types of building, Vehicles, and Colours, with twenty-six units while Theme 4 has one chapter: forms of energy, with four units. The chapters are structured to make their contents interactive to the pupils, beginning with objectives followed by keywords where pupils learn the major scientific words they are bound to come across in the course of their study and multiple activities that will help their interaction with the processes of approach, observation, manipulation, inquiry, experimenting and grouping or classifying. There is also revision exercise that will help to test the assimilation and understanding of what was taught in each chapter. Teachers, who are the facilitators of learning and organisers of interaction between pupils and objects in the environment, will find this resource material very relevant and useful, while pupils will find it captivating such that a positive attitude towards the study of science and technology is instilled.
